When planning a wedding there are a variety of arrangements that need to be made before your wedding day. It is important to know what needs to be done in preparation, so that you don’t have any last minute problems later. Take a look at our wedding planning checklist for an outline of the types of tasks you will need to plan for in the preparation for your wedding day.
Planning a Wedding Venue
Planning a wedding venue is the first thing that you need to do. After you set the date, you need to find a venue that has an opening on the date you have chosen. If you have decided to get married at one venue and have the reception at another, making these arrangements can be a bit more complicated.
Planning Wedding Food and Catering
The food that you will be serving at your wedding depends on your wedding venue. If you have chosen a venue who will cater your event, you would work with them on the menu. If not, you would need to hire an outside caterer. Getting the menu organised early is very important. If you are offering a variety of choices, you will need to know what they are before you can send out your invitations, so the guests can choose which dish they want.
Planning Your Wedding Cake
Your wedding cake is a very important detail and you should take your time to choose one carefully. Go to the bakery and taste different types of cakes so that you can find the best one for you. Ideally you should decide on the type of cake and the design at least eight months before your wedding.
Planning Seating Charts
If you are planning a formal, sit down dinner at your wedding then you will need to create a seating chart. This can be difficult and stressful, therefore, you should start as soon as you have received all of your RSVP’s.
Wedding Invitations and Save the Dates
After you have set the date and it is final, you would need to send out Save the Date cards. These cards will let friends and family know that you have set a date, so that they can plan accordingly. You will also need to choose wedding invitations – these will contain all of the necessary wedding details. Choosing the invitations is the easy part. Putting them together and addressing them can be time consuming, therefore, you should set enough time aside for this.
Planning Wedding Transportation
Transportation on your special day is very important. If you are having your wedding and reception at two separate venues, you, your future spouse, and the wedding party will need to get to the wedding venue and the reception venue. Arranging transportation early is important, particularly if you are planning to arrive in style. Many limo rental companies require notice and a deposit.
Planning the Wedding Music
You have a couple of options when it comes to the music at your wedding. During the ceremony, you can use live music from a piano, harp, or other instrument. You can also use a recording. If you are using live music, it will be necessary to audition and hire a musician. At the reception, you can have either a DJ or a live band. Whichever you choose, it is important to find someone and book them early. If you wait too long, the good ones can be booked already, leaving you very few options.
It is very important to have photographs of your big day. Most people have hundreds of wedding proofs to go through before they choose the ones that they want to use. If budget permits it is also a good idea to have a videographer to videotape the wedding. This will give you a chance to relive your wedding day any time you want. If you forget to make this arrangement, you won’t have anything to remember your day with.
Wedding Flowers and Centrepieces
Flowers, wedding bouquets and centrepieces are necessary for the wedding. It is important to sit down with a florist and let them know what your vision is. They can help you get the perfect flowers for the wedding venue, the bouquets, and if necessary, the centrepieces for the tables at the reception. If you are planning something other than flowers, for the reception, you should decide what you are going to do early.
Planning a Wedding Dress
You should shop for your wedding dress at least nine months before your wedding so there is time to do fittings, alterations, etc. For example, some brides lose weight after they purchase the dress and then need serious alterations that can take quite a bit of time and effort on the part of a good seamstress.
Bride’s and Bridesmaid’s Attire
For the bride, the dress is very important. Some brides take months to find the perfect dress. You would also need to worry about a veil, any wedding accessories such as tiara’s and pieces for your hair, shoes and bridesmaid’s dresses.
Before the wedding, the bride and groom should go ring shopping to find the perfect ring. This is not something that should be rushed. These rings are a symbol of your love and you will be wearing them forever.
Tuxedo for the Groom
If the groom doesn’t own a tuxedo, he would need to purchase one or rent one. The groomsmen will also need tuxedos. This can be done in the last few months leading up to the wedding.
Wedding Favours and Bridal Party Gifts
It is customary for the bride and groom to give gifts to the bridal party to thank them for being such an important part of their special day. It is important that these gifts are purchased early, so they can be given on the night of the rehearsal dinner.
